Cranio-osteopathy is becoming a treatment of choice in areas of structual imbalances, such as muscle tension joint restrictions or alterations in posture that can influence overall health.. Also called cranial sacral, a gentle, non-invasive, manual therapy developed by Dr William Sutherland through the cranial approach shared by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, Osteopathic Physician, founder of Osteopathy. Dr William Sutherland was the first Osteopathic Physician to conceptualize cranio-osteopathy.
Theory and practice is based on understanding the continuous subtle movement of the cranial bones and throughout the body, which result in a rhythm of approximately six to twelve cycles per minute. This rhythm is understood as a response to cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) fluctuations within the spinal cord and brain environment. The subtle movement extends outward to the entire body, in response to the fluid pressure changes around the Central Nervous System.
